Andy Oram: It might be worth mentioning in this chapter a position put forward by some of the more zealous defenders of free speech online, who say that libel and slander should not be considered actionable offenses online. Their argument is that everybody can post replies, and someone who libels or slanders will be drowned in rebuttals. There are problems with this position, one being that not everything is online yet, and a mainstream publication can still extract and repeat something cited online and publicize it more widely than the rebuttals.
